Original Short Stories Volume 05 Guy de Maupassant Books Reviews
Fully half of the stories in Volume 5 of the Short Stories of Maupassant are only mediocre, though quite readable. Maupassant is a pleasure to read even at his worst. But the other five of the twelve stories presented here are sublime. "Waiter, a Bock" and "After" are small bookends each describing a failed life (to some extent). Queen Hortense is another example of a life not quite lived. Monsieur Parent is a small nightmare that many people have experienced for themselves. The overall tone of this volume is cynical and depressive, but mesmerizing reading throughout. Timbuctoo is laden with racial overtones. Tombstones is a story that could be built right out of the scenario of the movie "Wedding Crashers". Overall this is an excellent book, but doesn't measure up to volumes 2 and 4, hence the four stars.
The short story form of literature is an American creation. First published and publicized by magazines, the fines of these were collected and this is among the best.
